Security Guard


Security guards protect their employers from robbery, property damage, and fire. In stores, security guards make sure that customers do not steal things. In a bank, they watch out for possible bank robbers. In a nightclub, they maintain order. In a company, they may check employees and visitors for their ID. Their main job is to keep people and property safe.

Opportunities for advancement to management positions are available in large organizations. Guards with management experience can open their own security agencies. Armed guards are given more responsibility and have more advancement opportunities. There is steady work in all forms of security and surveillance.

Entry-level skills: High school diploma or GED, specific training in required; driver's license; general fitness; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; knowledge of legal and safety regulations
